Crafting a cohesive experience
With a wide range of tools serving different purposes and user groups, the challenge was to develop a unified design system that could address the specific needs of each tool while ensuring consistency and efficiency across the board, acting as a single guiding framework for all internal tools.
This initiative extended beyond design alone: it was about using design tokens to manage complexity and support scalability.
MercadoLibre operates a wide range of internal tools, each serving different teams and purposes. The challenge was creating a single design system that could serve all of them without losing the specific needs of each. The goal went beyond visual consistency. It was about using design tokens to manage complexity and build something that could scale.
Components mapping
First, we carefully analyzed the existing platforms, looking closely at all the components and spotting similarities and chances to simplify things across the board.
With these insights in hand, we moved on to the creation phase, designing each component thoughtfully and with attention to detail.

Documentation and Tokenization
Clear documentation was essential to keep the system usable and maintainable over time. We tokenized all variables in Figma, laying the foundation for future theming and scaling.
The full process, from audit to build to documentation, gave us a system that was solid from the start.
